eat your heart out: gumbo pt.1!

hello readers and welcome to another recipe Monday (as i like to call it)
over the next two weeks i'm going to walk you through making gumbo from scratch
that's right, from scratch.
see, ever since i was a kid, i have always loved gumbo.
it was one of those things my mom wouldn't make often, so when we had it, it was special.
recently we watched an episode of Hart of Dixie, a wonderfully fun show,
and gumbo came up, which inspired me to make it from scratch.
the reason i'm splitting this into two weeks, is because the recipe calls for some stock,
either vegetable, chicken, or any other meat stock you wish to use.
and since homemade stock always tastes best, that's what this week is for.

now, as most of you probably know, there are many ways to make a stock (i will be making a chicken stock)
but this is how i made mine

*3-4 quarts of water.
*2 pounds Chicken parts like legs, thighs, wings etc. Or one whole chicken. Raw not cooked.
*Two onions quartered.
*4 stalks of celery quartered
*3 carrots quartered
*4 cloves garlic
* 3/4 teaspoon salt, 1/4 teaspoon black pepper and 1/8 teaspoon cayenne
*3 bay leaves
*2 sprigs fresh thyme or 1 teaspoon dried thyme
*4 whole peppercorns
*1 cup smoked sausage

In a large pot combine all of the ingredients.

Bring this to a boil then turn heat to low, cover and allow to cook for about 2-3 hours.
Longer is better because it takes some time to extract the full flavors from the bones.

Extracting that wonderful flavor from the bones adds more richness and great depth while boosting the character of your gumbo.

and voila, you have your very own homemade stock for all of your cooking needs.
just separate the liquid from the pot and your stock can be stored in the fridge or it can be frozen for longer preservation.
i myself like to use the leftover items from inside the pot to make something such as a sandwich or some pasta.

happy eating!

inspiration: food!

So this is a twist on my inspiration posts. Instead of doing something on fashion I'm doing something on food!

I've been seeing all sorts of pies and soups on t.v. and in magazines lately, probably due to the upcoming holidays and the fact that fall is upon us. It's really made me hungry and wanting them. Here are some that I'm achin' to make:

                         Tomato Soup, Roasted Squash Soup

I've been very into tomato soups lately. As kids arnab and I never had the tomato soup with our cheese sandwiches but it's always looked soo good and I've recently found out why its a kids staple.
The roasted squash soup was something I saw on Rachel Ray's show and it looks so good! (and I don't even like squash but I'm dying to try this one out)

Pumpkin Pie, Apple Pie, Pecan Pie

By the time Halloween comes around and throughout the month of November I'm always itching to bake some pie. I'm excited to make some pumpkin and apple pies! If you've never tried making them, you must, they're not hard to make at all!
I also have a recipe for an apple crisp that I love, you can find it here. I think it may be the first thing I make. :)

p.s. Congrats to the St. Louis Cardinals for the World Series win!
(I wish it were the Angels, but there's always next season!)

i'm wide awake, it's morning

We had breakfast on Sunday with our friends and I am not a breakfast eater but it's my favorite meal when I'm with my friends.
We go to a small place called Joyce's Coffee Shop:

near Cal State Northridge that serves really good food for a really good price.

alternative dressing

One store that both arnab and I love to shop at is Alternative Apparel. They carry clothes in both of our sizes, we can share most of the items we buy there, the clothing styles are always lovely, a lot of the material that they use is sinfully soft, the pricing is great and they have sales and promotions all throughout the year! (The last one is quite detrimental to mine and arnab's bank account...)

I'm a cannonball to a house on fire

I realized this weekend that I wouldn't be wearing shorts as much any more because it's getting chillier. I don't like to wear shorts over tights so this will likely be one of the last times I'll be wearing them and since I've been relying on them this whole summer, it makes me kind of sad.
But, the silver lining is that both arnab and I can start bringing out all the cardigans, sweaters, jackets, and coats that we have (and between the two of us, the number is great!)

arnab is wearing vintage leather jacket, H&M shirt, Levi's jeans, Ben Sherman hat, Ray Ban sunglasses, and Guess boots
anisa is wearing a J Crew top, vintage boy blazer, vintage necklace, Forever 21 shorts, diy grocery bag, and Calvin Klein heels

eat your heart out: taco/burrito hybrid!

Our taco/burrito hybrid!

A couple of weeks back we decided to try our hand at soft tacos. They came out perfect except that our tortillas were a bit to big to be tacos so we improvised and made them into burritos. :)

The best thing about making tacos is that it is fairly easy, you most likely already have the ingredients, and you can make them to fit your tastes! This won't be like our usual recipe posts since we don't have exact measurements or what not, but I 'll give you guys a simple overview of what we did.

1. Tortillas (we got ours from Trader Joe's, try looking for smaller sized ones if you can, or you can make them from scratch if you'd like)
2. Meat, if you eat meat any will do so pick your favorite, if you don't then skip this ingridient (we choose chicken)
3. Gather anything else you might like in your tacos, we made salsa (and by 'we' I mean arnab)
Other things you can add to your tacos: guacamole, lettuce, green peppers, cheese

1. Cook your meat. We boiled the chicken, shredded it, and then fried it with some olive oil, salt, black peppers, and green peppers

 2. arnab made salsa. He cut up tomatoes, onions, cilantro, and added salt, black pepper, and cayenne pepper (sorry I don't have exact measurements.) He took half of this mixture and blended it in a blender for a few seconds and then mixed it back in to the solids.

 3. Make your tacos!

 And enjoy. :)

Happy Eating!

10 things!

Hi guys!
I hope everyone's doing well!
arnab and I are going to meet our friends for breakfast and I for one am very excited as it feels like forever since we've seen each other!

anisa's 5 thing

My new Betsey Johnson snake necklace and bracelet. I'm sure there are a lot of people who think Betsey Johnson jewelry is a bit too much on the gaudy side, but that's why I love them so much. While a lot of the peices are over the top, I think they make fantastic statement pieces for the outfit that you just can't seem to spice up. With it is a random snake pin I bought a few months back. I love snakes!!

Collecting all my clutches from all around the house and finally putting them in an organized drawer.
I took out all my scarves this week. I know that the weather has been all over the place here and though I'm not expecting winter to come anytime soon, scarves are wonderful for the chilly nights that are already here to stay.

If you remember last week I did a post on lace. Here are two lace items I can't wait to wear as soon as it gets colder.

I also found my umbrella because I don't want to chance not knowing where it is in case it rains. I got this Coach umbrella last Christmas from my very lovely friend Iliana. It's the most perfect umbrella for me. :)

arnab's 5 things

for this week's 5 things i've decided to spotlight a couple of great video games

now, i'm not as big a fanatic as some folks are but at the same time i do love me some games

this was one of the first games i got when i got my ps3
i thought it was fantastic and overall very fun

this was a two for one pack that anisa got me
it was fun, exciting, and provided hours of entertainment

this game was a surprise hit for me
the game play was long, which i loved, and the action was awesome

i am currently still playing this game

it's a fantastic RPG and i'm loving it

i was going to add Batman Arkham Asylum to this list, but i figured i'd have a variety
i have been more excited for this game than i have ever been for any game
it is currently sitting on the table mocking me

have a great weekend!

nothing seems the same

Los Angeles is going through a strange back and forth where the weather is concerned. It's not a terribly bad thing but you do have to prepare for both the cold and the warmth, so it can be tricky.

Both arnab and I are wearing our basics, this post. Though it seems like arnab and I shop a lot, most of the time we try and restrain oursleves. More and more I've found that I like to save money and spend it on items of clothing that I know I'll be wearing forever. arnab is a lot better about this then I am but I'm getting better. It's just starting to make more sense to spend more on quality items that won't go out of style then to constantly buy things that will. (as I write this I see how obvious my last statement is, well better to learn now then never...)

arnab is wearing Diesel button down, Diesel Black and Gold slacks, and Alfani boots

anisa is wearing a Levi's denim shirt, a French Connection dress, a vintage bag, and Michael Kors heels
Today's blot post title is a Heartless Bastards song.
Have a wonderful Friday!
