eat your heart out: chocolate sponge roll cake!

Chocolate Sponge Roll Cake

Hey everyone!

So I found this recipe at Joy of Baking and was very curious to see if I could make it.
Plus, it looked yummy!
I knew I could make the sponge cake and the whipping cream, which is half the work, but my one hesitation?
The rolling of the cake.

Since making the cake the first time, I've made it two more times!
The recipe isn't much work, thankfully, and takes about 2 hours to make (if you factor in wait times for cooling and such) and the rolling of the cake isn't as scary as I thought it'd be.
The end result?
A very tasty, not too sweet, not too chocolaty cake that's been a hit with everyone who's tried it!

Ingridients
Cake:
6 large eggs, separated
4 ounces (120 grams)
semisweet chocolate, chopped
1/4 cup (50 grams) plus 2 tablespoons (30 grams) granulated white sugar
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
3/4 teaspoon cream of tartar

Whipped Cream:
1 cup (240 ml) cold heavy whipping cream
1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
1 tablespoon (15 grams) granulated white sugar

You can find the recipe here: Joy of Baking, including a very helpful video of the steps!

I took pictures of the process but since it's a reiteration of the video I though I'd just post the pictures of the part where I rolled the cake, which was what freaked me out the most.

Begin the rolling after the cake has cooled completely.
Use the parchment paper to help you roll and then slowly pull the parchment paper away from the cake, it should separate fairly easily.

Continue to roll until you reach close to the end of the cake and then transfer the cake, with the help of the parchment paper, to plate or platter you'll be using.
{or continue rolling off the baking pan and cut the cake from there}

The ends of the cake may look like the picture above.
Simply cut off a sliver and then it'll look like this:

Some more helpful tips:
1. When it says to cool the melted chocolate, let it cool completely, otherwise when you mix it in with the egg yolks the chocolate will harden again.
If that does happen though, don't freak out, it's totally what happened to me.
I simply flattened any chocolate chunks I saw and you will get the black spots on the cake (as seen on my cake) but it doesn't affect the cake at all unless you don't flatten out any big chunks, then you'll definitely bite into those chunks.
2. As with all sponge cakes it is key that the egg whites become white and fluffy but before you move on to the folding stage make sure all the egg whites are light and fluffy (simply by tilting the mixing bowl) just to be sure there isn't still some whites that have yet to reach the light, fluffy stage.
3. Also when you're spreading out the cake onto the cake pan make sure, or try to make sure, that the cake batter is even throughout the pan otherwise if one side is thicker then the other, the thinner side will be very hard to roll out.
4. If, during the rolling stage a piece of the cake separates from the rest of the cake, instead of just the parchment paper separating, that's okay too.
Just carefully separate it from the parchment paper and place the piece back in it's spot on the cake, trust me it won't look like it was ever separated.
;)
[feel free to ask me if you have any questions]

And tada!
You've finished.
The cake can be refrigerated for about 3-5 days, in case you have leftovers.
:]

Happy eating!

10 things!

Hey!
We haven't done a '10 things' in ages!!
This one will be a bit different as we'll be listing the top 5 things we're listening to right now because music is always playing around us, so we figured why not.
Hope you enjoy!

anisa's top 5:
{in no particular order}

Whether I'm in my car or listening on my iPod I've been finding myself looking for these artists, these albums, and the songs from them.

1.
Joe Purdy: Only Four Seasons

I am a proud owner of all of Joe Purdy's albums and I'm always listening to his songs.
Recently this album has found it's way into my car and I find myself sticking it into my stereo more often than not.
The songs are sweet, soft, smooth, and fun.
It always makes me happy.

2.
Macklemore & Ryan Lewis: The Heist

I love this album!
When we first got it I had to force myself to remove it from my car so I wouldn't get sick of it or something.
Well that plan was a bit of a fail because I'm still constantly listening to the album, just through my iPod.
And!
I've yet to get sick of any of the songs.

3.
Minor Threat

Sometimes I'm sure I look super weird blasting Minor Threat on my car radio but oh well!
Their song "Minor Threat" has always been like an anthem to me.
Sometimes I think that I've been listening to this band for ages and that reminds me that I'm getting older, but then I think I'm glad that I'm older and I'm still loving bands like this one.

4.
Mumford & Sons: Babel

Like The Heist, this album has been playing constantly since I got it.
My favorite song on the album is "Not With Haste" and sometimes I have to talk myself out of playing it over and over again.
p.s. check out "Learn Me Right," on the Brave soundtrack.
It's the same song as "Not With Haste" but it's performed by Birdy and Mumford & Sons and it's amazing!

5.
Operation Ivy: Energy

The day I stop loving Operation Ivy will be the day, I don't know, pigs fly.
These guys and this album is one of my favorites ever.
The messages the songs send, the fantastically catchy tunes, it all adds up to brilliance!

arnab's top 5:
Originally I was going to set up my list as albums as well, but then there were a couple songs that as per right now I'm rocking on the daily, so my list will be a bit of a mix.

So here it is, in no particular order.

1.
Taylor Swift: Red

There's no way this list would be complete without Taylor Swift, because that's what is currently playing on repeat in my car!
Her newest album Red is excellent. The whole cd is flippin' amazing. I unabashedly love Taylor Swift and on any given day I can be found belting out her songs driving two and from my home to anywhere I need to go. If you haven't heard this album yet, go do it right now. I guarantee you won't regret it.

2.
"Closer" by Tegan and Sara

I cannot tell you enough how great this song is. The melody, the lyrics, the voice, and if you get the chance, the music video. It all works brilliantly together. Seriously, once you're done with T-Swizzle, give this song a listen.

3.
Macklemore and Ryan Lewis: The Heist

This album is the shit. From start to finish, these two guys, with a slew of talented guests, have produced a beast of an album. Ever since this cd has left Anisa's car, it has found a home in mine, and has remained there since.

4.
"Give It All Back" by Noah and the Whale

Noah and the Whale have been an everlasting presence in my music shuffle ever since they waltzed their way into my life, around 5 or so years ago. This song has stuck with me for the last 5 or 6 months. It's upbeat, uplifting, wicked fun. Go listen to it! And then go listen to all of their awesome stuff!

5.
"Kiss You" by One Direction

What can I say, I listen to an eclectic array of music. And sometimes that happens to include kickass boybands from across the pond. Anywho, I can't attest to knowing all that many songs of theirs, probably about a handful really, but the ones I know are catchy, poppy, and wildly entertaining, and that's fantastic.
This song in particular is the one that recently started my journey to being a fan.

So there it is, now quit staring and start listening!
Cheers!

i thought you and me might wander...

We went to the Rose Bowl Flea Market for the first time this past Sunday and we took our mom.
The whole thing was huge.
HUGE!
We got there at around 11 (it opens at 9) and though I was worried it would be hell driving in and finding parking and I was happy to see that it wasn't so bad!
phew!
We walked around for hours, looking through heaps of clothes, jewelry, accessories, and other odds and ends.
It was a super fun day.
